Over Half of US Women Dissatisfied with Orgasms

A recent study reveals that a majority of women are unhappy with both the quality and frequency of their orgasms.

Research indicates that more than half of women aged 18 to 55 experience some frustration with their sex lives. This dissatisfaction is especially pronounced regarding orgasms, societal stigma, libido, and communication with their partners.

Conducted by Flo Health, a period and cycle tracking app with 65 million monthly users, the study found that 58% of US women are not fully satisfied with their orgasm quality, and 62% are unhappy with the frequency.

When asked what they would most like to improve in their sex lives, 34% of respondents expressed a desire to feel more comfortable with their bodies.

“These statistics point to a pleasure gap — a systemic devaluing of women’s pleasure compared to that of men, which inevitably decreases our access to orgasm, positive body image, and belief that our desires matter,” says Casey Tanner, MA, a Flo medical expert and certified sex therapist, to Healthnews.

The study also highlighted that one in four women find sex shameful, and nearly one in five attribute their sexual dissatisfaction to feelings of shame. Additionally, 25% of women are not satisfied with their sex lives due to difficulties in achieving orgasm.

Tanner emphasizes that these statistics should not lead to the assumption that women are simply more complicated or harder to please. “The wider context makes clear that women are not broken,” she says. “They have a deep, expansive capacity for pleasure if only their needs and desires received the same attention as those of men.”

The study also suggests a strong desire for more education, with 46% of respondents wanting to learn more about what turns them on, and an equal percentage hoping their partner would learn the same.

### Flo Launches 'Unlock Your Orgasm' Program

To address this dissatisfaction and educational gap, Flo is launching a pleasure education program called “Unlock Your Orgasm.”

This program aims to help users boost their self-confidence, define their sexual needs, and learn to communicate their preferences with their partners. Flo states that the program will essentially help users create a personal roadmap to reach climax.

The program consists of a five-step journey, including videos, shame-free self-discovery exercises, and take-home activities designed to encourage sexual exploration.

“‘Unlock Your Orgasm’ isn’t the standard sex ed course that leaves you feeling awkward or hands you a couple of condoms,” says Tanner, who contributed to the program's design. “This program represents a paradigm shift in sexual education. By offering personalized support and resources, we replace outdated tools for measuring a ‘good sex life’ with personalized ways to attune to your sexuality.”
