Microsoft resolves gamers' lawsuit related to Activision acquisition

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Microsoft Corp. has settled a lawsuit filed by a group of gamers who sought to block its $69 billion acquisition of video game publisher Activision Blizzard.

The settlement terms remain undisclosed. Both parties agreed to dismiss the lawsuit and will cover their own legal costs, according to a court filing on Monday.

The lawsuit, initiated in 2022 in a U.S. federal court in San Francisco, represented 10 gamers who are fans of Activision Blizzard’s popular franchises like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo.

The deal took nearly 22 months to finalize, amid concerns from competitors and regulators that Microsoft could leverage its expanding game portfolio to limit competition. This acquisition is part of a larger trend of industry consolidation, raising concerns among independent developers who fear being overshadowed by blockbuster franchises.

In a statement, Microsoft said, “the parties have resolved the litigation.”
