New Lesbian-Owned Lounge DAME Aims to Energize Lincoln's Nightlife

A new chapter in Lincoln's nightlife is set to begin as Cassie Tate and Tiff Bailey prepare for the grand opening of DAME, a lounge designed to provide a welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. This exciting venture stems from their desire for a more relaxed environment, as the duo sought an alternative to the high-energy nightlife scene.

"We were talking about the lack of an easygoing queer space in Lincoln," Tate explained, having recently sold her home and decided to invest the proceeds into this project. "Then it hit us—why not create one ourselves?"

DAME will open its doors on Saturday at 2713 N. 48th St., in the University Place area, conveniently close to Nebraska Wesleyan University. The lounge aims to be a safe haven for the queer community, allowing individuals to express their authentic selves freely.

"Our primary goal is to create a space where people feel at home and can be true to themselves," Tate said with passion. "Safety and inclusivity are at the heart of our mission." From burlesque shows to community events, DAME will offer a wide range of activities to celebrate and unite diversity.

The opening event will be hosted by Ryan Anthony and will feature a vibrant performance by Mae Devour. With doors opening at noon and festivities kicking off at 9 p.m., anticipation is high. Tate noted that they've received "30 times more RSVPs on our Facebook than we can accommodate, so we're preparing for a busy day!"

Devour, who uses she/they pronouns, emphasized the importance of safe spaces in the community: "We’re always looking for environments where we can connect and perform without fear. Being part of DAME's inaugural night means a lot to me and Lincoln's LGBTQ+ story."

Originally set to launch in spring 2024, DAME's opening faced several delays due to regulatory challenges and renovation setbacks. Tate's vision for the lounge comes after the closure of Panic, another LGBTQ+ venue that shut down during the pandemic.

Bailey fondly recalled Panic, saying, "Many people played significant roles in my coming out journey there. I hope DAME can provide that same supportive environment for others." Kara Kugler-Wright, the former owner of Panic Bar, highlighted the need for safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community, stating, "It's essential for Lincoln to have a supportive hub where individuals can truly be themselves and feel accepted."

Interestingly, DAME pays tribute to its predecessor by displaying the old Panic sign near its entrance. Tate expressed her desire for DAME to be more than just a bar: "We envision a place where people create lasting memories—meeting partners, celebrating milestones like 21st birthdays. We want this to be a cherished space in our community."

Excitement is building for what promises to be a significant day in Lincoln's nightlife. DAME aims to foster connections, encourage authenticity, and cultivate a vibrant, supportive atmosphere.
