1 In 3 Want To Try Role-Playing During Sex. Here's How To Get Started

Cras eget sem nec dui volutpat ultrices.

As the temperature rises, so does our interest in spicing up our sex lives, according to a recent study. Wellness platform Hims & Hers surveyed over 3,500 Brits for its Let’s Talk About Sex: The 2023 UK Report, revealing the top 10 sexual trends for the season.

Among the most popular desires were consensual exhibitionism (the desire to be seen naked or engage in sexual activity in front of others), pegging (anal sex using a strap-on), dry dating (avoiding alcohol and drugs), and dom/sub relationships. However, topping the list, with nearly one in three people (32%) eager to try it, was role-play.

To delve deeper into the intricacies of role-playing, HuffPost UK exclusively interviewed Isabelle Uren, a certified sex expert and site manager at Bed Bible.

What exactly is role-playing? "Role-playing involves adopting different personas during or leading up to sexual activity," explains Uren. "You might use role-play to delve into specific kinks or fantasies, to explore different facets of your personality or relationship dynamics, or simply to add some excitement!"

Role-play can encompass wearing costumes and utilizing specific sex toys or accessories, but it can also manifest in the way you communicate and interact with your partner.

For those new to role-playing, how can they dip their toes in? You might feel a bit apprehensive or awkward, so how do you broach the topic with your partner? "Discuss the types of role-play that interest you and find something that excites both of you," suggests Uren. "Start by expressing your appreciation for their willingness to explore this with you and reassure them that you can take things at a comfortable pace. The more confident partner might also propose taking the lead."

In addition to sharing your fantasies, it's crucial to establish boundaries. "Selecting a safe word, one that wouldn't naturally arise in the scenario, which can halt all activity immediately if you feel uncomfortable, is also vital preparation," she advises. "If you're just beginning with role-play, I suggest easing into it. You don't need to rush out and buy costumes and accessories right away. Instead, you can start by simply changing the way you communicate with each other."

Here are some topics to broach during your initial discussions about role-play:

- Are there any fantasies you typically think about or encounter in pornography that you'd like to try?

- Do you have any particular kinks you'd like to incorporate into your role-play?

- Are there any power dynamics you'd like to explore, such as assuming a more dominant or submissive role?

- Are there any costumes or looks that you find particularly arousing?

Initiate with some prelude. Instead of saving the excitement for the end of the day, incorporate role-playing into your conversations throughout the day to set the mood, suggests Uren. "Sending a suggestive text or making a playful remark here and there can be a simple way to ignite the spark," she suggests.

Take care of each other even after the role-play session is over. "Remember the importance of aftercare," she advises. Spend time cuddling, sharing a meal or drink, and discussing your experiences. What aspects did you enjoy, and was there anything that didn’t quite hit the mark? If you were to try it again, what enhancements would you consider? "And most importantly, have fun," Uren adds. "While it might feel awkward at times, try to embrace the moment with laughter! Sex should be enjoyable, and sharing laughter with your partner can deepen intimacy. The goal is to enjoy yourselves, not to deliver a performance worthy of an Oscar."

What advantages does role-play bring to your relationship? It injects novelty into your dynamic, leading to sexual excitement and maintaining a sense of freshness. Role-play also serves as a platform to explore various kinks and fantasies with your partner, discovering new avenues for both physical and psychological pleasure. Engaging in different roles allows for a deeper understanding of each other. Furthermore, it fosters playfulness and creativity in your sexual interactions, exposing you to novel ways of experiencing pleasure. Trying something new that requires vulnerability can also foster trust and deepen intimacy.
