God’s Response to Global Warming

Many religious beliefs portray God as omnipotent, omniscient, and just. Clerics from various faiths often see these attributes as somewhat contradictory, but let's set that aside for now.

If God is indeed all-powerful and all-knowing, then the warming of our planet can be seen as God taking lives by driving catastrophic events. These include powerful storms that threaten everyone in their path, rising sea levels that flood homes and communities, wildfires that consume vast areas, and droughts that parch the land. These events leave survivors mourning their loved ones and enduring lasting trauma. Additionally, the warming planet spreads diseases to new areas, creating modern plagues that force many to flee, haunted by nightmares.

These are Biblical-scale catastrophes—storms, fires, floods, pestilence—yet humanity continues to ignore what could be interpreted as signs of God’s displeasure. We persist in building, living, and making money despite what may be divine judgment for our destruction of the world God gave us.

God’s actions might save the planet but at the cost of human lives. The death of humanity could halt global warming since people are the primary contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. In this view, God is solving the problem by executing judgment on us.

Historically, people have not heeded divine warnings. Will we do better now? Will we stop the flow and burning of greenhouse gases to honor what could be perceived as God’s judgment? Is making money worth defying God’s will? Is there a divine right to profit from activities that destroy the earth? Are we exempt from divine judgment?

For believers, God’s judgment appears clear—we are disregarding the Lord’s will. The consequences are severe. Those who ignore the evidence of divine displeasure cannot claim to be faithful to the Lord.

For non-believers, our demise is at the hands of fellow humans, which gives us the right to defend ourselves. We must decide whether to unite and fight against this threat or perish together.

Whether motivated by faith or secular reasons, we all have a duty to combat global warming before our planet burns, dries, starves, and ultimately destroys us all.

Wake up, people. Let us join forces to save each other and avoid the judgment of the Lord.
