Google has joined other major AI companies in turning to nuclear power to address the immense energy demands of its data centers. The company has entered into an agreement with Kairos Power to develop up to 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear power by 2035.
Based in Alameda, California, Kairos Power plans to build and operate multiple nuclear reactors through purchase-power agreements, aiming to power Google’s data centers by 2030. According to Kairos, this partnership represents “the first corporate agreement for multiple deployments of a single advanced-reactor design in the U.S.”
With this deal, Google follows Amazon, Oracle, and Microsoft, who all secured nuclear-power agreements earlier this year. Google’s senior director of energy and climate, Michael Terrell, stated that the partnership “helps accelerate a new technology to meet energy needs cleanly and reliably, unlocking AI's full potential for everyone.”
Nuclear power is becoming an attractive option for tech companies due to its consistent, carbon-free output, especially as AI applications require more energy than traditional tech. As other renewable sources like solar and wind can be intermittent, nuclear power offers a reliable alternative for round-the-clock clean energy.
