Ricky Martin’s father encouraged him to openly acknowledge his homosexuality to avoid instilling a culture of dishonesty in his children. The
52-year-old musician, who welcomed twin sons Matteo and Valentino in 2008 through gestational surrogacy and later had daughter Lucia, five,
and son Renn, four, during his relationship with ex-husband Jwan Yosef, acknowledged that he might not have publicly come out in 2010 if it
hadn't been for his father Enrique Morales' counsel. Speaking on SiriusXM’s ‘Andy Cohen Live’, Ricky recounted how his professional advisors
had cautioned him against revealing his sexual orientation, warning that it could spell the end of his career. They suggested, "You don’t need
to disclose it to the public. Your friends and family already know. Why make a public announcement?”
The singer expressed that despite his team's lack of understanding about the importance of his coming out, his father encouraged him to be
truthful. He recounted his father's words, emphasizing the need for honesty and openness, saying, "Are you going to teach your kids to lie?
You have to be transparent. You have to step forward... I want to support you. How can we make this happen?" The singer acknowledged his
father's support, acknowledging the process and uncertainty surrounding how to proceed, whether through an interview, a written letter, or a
social media announcement.
Regarding his coming out to his mother, he revealed that he disclosed his sexuality to her when he was 18, but she needed time to process the
news. He shared her concerns about potential cruelty from others but ensured she was with him when he made the public announcement, writing a
letter on his website and sharing it via Twitter. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed a desire to come out multiple times, describing
the overwhelming feeling of relief and emotion upon sharing his truth. He recounted the moment of sending the message and the immediate need
for comfort, seeking a hug from his assistant.
